Lesion Removal Treatment

With time, the skin can be damaged, resulting in unsightly lesions that are difficult to hide. What are Lesions?

The definition of lesion is quite broad. Generally, they are defined as tissue on the body that is considered abnormal. Lesions arise from damage afflicted to healthy tissue, whether it is by trauma, disease, or other. They greatly vary in appearance. Lesions can be visibly present or take the shape of a hole that does not normally exist at the site.

At Wellsprings Medical and Spa, two types of lesions can be treated: pigmented and vascular.

Pigmented Lesions

Pigmented lesions are concentrations of melanin in the skin. They can be of any size or shape and may also be slightly elevated on the skin’s surface. Some of the most common of all pigmented lesions are freckles, solar lentigines (liver spots and sun spots), and cafe au lait spots. These are all considered to be benign.

Freckles are most commonly the result of genetics or sun exposure. Freckles caused by sunburns have irregular borders and are typically darker brown than those that are caused by genetics.

Solar lentigines are usually caused by excessive sun exposure, therefore they appear on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. They can be of any colour from light brown to black.

Cafe au lait spots are light brown, flat, and larger in size than other types of pigmented lesions. They are usually classified as a type of birthmark because they exist at birth. However, some may appear with age or with the development of the disease neurofibromatosis. Cafe au lait spots that appear as an indication of neurofibromatosis are generally larger and appear at a greater frequency on the body (totalling more than 6).

A complimentary consultation with a patient consultant is required before undergoing treatment to ensure that any lesion treated is benign, is not an indication of something serious, and can be effectively removed or reduced.

Vascular Lesions

Vascular lesions are abnormal blood vessels on the body or face. They can be large and overgrown, or be a multitude of small blood vessels in one area. Some common vascular lesions are broken capillaries and spider veins.

Vascular lesions can be treated at Wellsprings Medical with The StarLux™ 500, fitted with the LuxG™ Pulsed Light Handpiece, the MedLite® C6 Laser, or the Lyra Nd:YAG Laser. Consultation with a patient consultant will determine which system is the most appropriate for you.
